Rachna is an artist-environmentalist-activist who enjoys all things creative – be it fine arts, creative writing, or performance. First and foremost an artist, Rachna explores various mediums to give expression to what is alive for her in the moment. Her inspiration is her deep connection with nature and she works with recycled, found and natural materials in a process-oriented approach to discover what the act of art making might reveal. Painting, print-making, collage and installations are all part of her repertoire. Toshniwal founded The Other Side Studio in Alibaug as a space to co-create and collaborate with like-minded individuals around the themes of creativity, community and consciousness in a vibrant natural setting. Through her various careers, theatre and performance have been alive for her in many ways – through set design, production, and acting with various theatre companies. The physicality, freedom of expression and versatility that the performance space provides is what draws Rachna to this art form. Rachna is a certified Intermodal Expressive Arts Practitioner (with Swahansa, India and the European Graduate School, Switzerland) and conducts workshops that bring together visual arts, poetry movement and performance into a seamless whole. She holds a Dual MA degree in Natural Resource Management and Sustainable Development and International Affairs from The University for Peace, Costa Rica and American University, Washington DC, USA and worked in the field of grassroots sustainable development and eco-activism for 15+ years. She believes in fostering ways to take the intimacy of creative expression into the public domain by exploring the essence and connections between human existence, consciousness and nature. Rachna lives and works in Mumbai and Alibaug.
